The dark bird in the picture disappeared and has never been seen again, we fear, lost to a hawk.
We brought the white one back in anticipation of one day getting a set of birds again.
We brought her back to our friends (the breeders) who live 6 miles away, also on the coast.
A week ago Ford told us the bird was on the roof of our house. We watched it fly and hang around our home for hours. Finally it flew away south back towards her new home. I called my friends to let them know she was on her way home and they told us later that she did make it back.
She came back again on Saturday. This time Ford put some food and water in her house and she hung out most of the time in there. At 9 pm she was still in there so we locked her in. We will be bringing her back to our friends again today.
He told us the two male birds had been fighting over her. She did lay an egg, but the males kept fighting. He said she and her mate took off together. She made it to our house but the male did not, nor did he make it back to his house.
We are still hoping he makes it home and they will be reunited.
I am still amazed at how she can find us. We drove her there in a paper bag, how can she know where our exact house is? She isn't a homing pigeon per se, but she obviously has those skills at least up to 6 miles. Amazing.
The part about nature that I have a hard time with.....the males fighting over her are her father and uncle, I mean..........Yuck!
